Last weekend, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stomped into town with a less-than-stellar $47.7 million take at the box office. That was good enough to take the top spot away from Disney’s Aladdin, but it won’t make nearly enough in its second frame to fend off this weeks’ competition. Illumination is set to release the family-friendly animated sequel The Secret Life of Pets 2, while 20th Century Fox will unleash Dark Phoenix. But who will come out on top?
Ultimately, barring some sort of miracle, it’s very likely going to be The Secret Life of Pets 2 taking the top spot at the box office. The animated sequel has added some star power in the form of Harrison Ford, who will be making his feature animated debut. Patton Oswalt also joins the cast, taking over as Max. Louis C.K. voiced the dog in the first movie, but he lost the gig following a string of sexual misconduct accusations. Chris Renaud returns to the director’s chair and, given how well the first movie did, Illumination Entertainment should have another hit on their hands.
Projections, on the low end, have the movie bringing in around $50 million, whereas some estimates have it bringing in as much as $75 million. Even on the low end, that should be enough to take the top spot this weekend. The Secret Life of Pets dramatically over-performed in 2016, bringing in $875 million worldwide. So don’t be surprised if this one manages to beat projections. As of this writing, the sequel has a decent 63 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But that should be more than enough to win over the family crowd.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have Dark Phoenix. This is going to be the final entry in the long-running Fox version of the X-Men franchise and, sadly, it’s not looking good. Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut currently has a very poor 21 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s expected to come in second place with between $40 and $50 million, which is fine-ish. Though, given the response, it’s long-term prospects aren’t terribly good and it’s probably going to crash and burn in the weeks to come.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters has scored well with moviegoers, yet hasn’t done much for critics. We should expect to see approximately a 50 percent week-to-week drop, giving it a second weekend take in the neighborhood of $24 million. It’s going to be in a close race with Aladdin, which could do between $20 and $25 million, as Disney’s latest live-action remake has proved to be a hit. Rounding out the top five should be the Elton John biopic Rocketman, which has also been doing extremely well. The Taron Egerton-starrer is looking at between $11 and $14 million.
