Josh Gad will not be playing the Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The actor recently addressed the rumors in a serious manner on social media after playfully teasing DC fans for over a year. Reeves’ take on the Caped Crusader is finally starting to come together with the recent announcement of Robert Pattinson taking on the lead role as the new Bruce Wayne. Now, we’re waiting to get clarification on the villains and who will be playing them on the big screen.
Production on The Batman is expected to begin in early 2020, but Josh Gad will not be facing off against Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight when it begins. Gad had a great time leading fans on over the past year, but in a fun way. He neither confirmed nor denied the rumors until today. He had this to say.
“Ok, seeing as I keep getting this question…as much as I have LOVED torturing you all with teasing you about the Penguin, I feel like it’s time to tell you… I’m NOT actually playing this character. But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the fan art and the love.”
Many DC fans were looking forward to seeing Josh Gad take on the role of the Penguin on the big screen. Though it has not been confirmed, it is believed Penguin and Catwoman will be the villains featured in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Firefly and the Riddler are also rumored to be making life for Batman in Gotham City pretty tough. As with Penguin and Catwoman, these villains have not been officially confirmed yet. With production set to begin soon, casting should reveal who will end up in the movie. And no speculation must begin. If not Josh Gad, who is the best person to take on Penguin?
When Ben Affleck was still attached to The Batman, he reportedly wanted to feature a villain who had not been seen on the big screen yet. Penguin, Catwoman, and Riddler have all been featured in past Batman movies and Affleck was looking for something different, which ultimately went against what the studio was looking to do. In the end, Matt Reeves came in and took over the writing and directing aspects, crafting a story which will reportedly bring a younger Bruce Wayne back to his detective roots.
While some DC fans will be bummed to learn Josh Gad isn’t attached to The Batman, there is plenty more to get excited about. Or, there is more to get upset about, it all depends on the outlook. Some are totally into the idea of Robert Pattinson taking on the role of the Caped Crusader, while others are not into the idea at all. When it comes down to it, casting is never going to satisfy everybody and it will be left to the performances to speak for themselves when The Batman hits theaters in 2021.
